Men’s Interpersonal Therapy Group
Men often experience more difficulties connecting than women do, especially when it comes to other men. They often feel competitive with other men, fearing showing any vulnerability and keeping things on the surface. This often leads to a sense of isolation and loneliness, alienation from their peers, and a sense of living life inauthentically. As such, men often struggle in silence.
Our group is a place to change that. Co-led by psychologists Dr. Neal Brugman and Dr. Jim Kemp, this therapy group is for men of all ages who want to increase their sense of connection to others and themselves. This group has no set agenda or curriculum and instead focuses on the challenges that members bring to the group, as well as focusing on the “here and now” of what is happening in the relationships with others in the group. As a result, each member’s challenges in their everyday world comes into the group where we can look at it with curiosity and non-judgement, and help each member try new ways of relating that lead them to the connections they want to have.
It’s unfortunate that, in our culture, group therapy has often been shown inaccurately leading many to have a negative view of it. In contrast, research and personal experience of members and therapists alike have shown that group therapy is, at some times, MORE helpful than individual treatment. It radically reduces isolation, increases support, and shows participants that their struggles are shared by many others.
Drs. Brugman and Kemp believe strongly in the power of group to heal – they have run this men’s group since 2013 and also participate as members in groups of their own.
